The end of the American-Vietnam War came suddenly on April 30, 1975. Among the few Western observers who stayed on after the ceasefire were a few Quaker volunteers, working for the American Friends Service Committee. The couple working as “Saigon Representatives,” Paul and Sophie Quinn-Judge, were able to observe the chaotic surrender of the South Vietnamese troops, as they tore off their uniforms and handed in their rifles. They stayed on in Saigon until early July, to observe the transition to a new government.
